Cultural Resource Management

Cultural resource management (CRM) is the practice of identifying, assessing, preserving, and managing cultural resources. CRM helps us to protect and preserve our cultural heritage, which has often been threatened or destroyed by colonization, development, and other factors.

Cultural resources are not just objects or places, but are often sacred sites that are important for our religious and cultural practices. These sites can include burial grounds, ceremonial sites, and traditional gathering places. The destruction or disturbance of these sites can be deeply traumatic for our communities, and the loss of cultural resources can also result in a loss of cultural identity and traditions.

Through our CRM program, we work with archaeologists, historians, and other professionals to identify and protect cultural resources. This includes conducting surveys to identify sites, developing plans to manage and protect them, and working with developers and government agencies to ensure that cultural resources are not harmed or destroyed during development projects. Through our CRM program, we help ensure that our cultural heritage is passed on to future generations.

CRM Program

Native American Monitoring Services

Our Native American Monitoring services include monitoring construction activities to ensure that cultural resources are not impacted, and documenting any discoveries or changes to the site. We also help to implement mitigation measures, such as rerouting construction activities or adjusting project plans to avoid or minimize impacts to cultural resources. Additionally, we may provide guidance and training to project staff and contractors on how to identify and avoid damaging cultural resources, and how to handle any discoveries in accordance with applicable laws and regulations. By being on-site during the construction phase, we can ensure that our cultural resources are protected and preserved, and that any impacts are minimized or avoided.

Archaeological Monitoring Services

We also provide archaeological monitoring services, which include monitoring construction activities, conducting surveys and assessments, and documenting discoveries of cultural significance.

CEQA Compliance

CEQA compliance is crucial for the protection and preservation of California's cultural resources. We engage in meaningful consultation with lead agencies to ensure CEQA compliance and consultation in accordance with AB 52 and SB 18. This involves working with lead agencies to identify and evaluate cultural resources, share information about the potential impacts of the project on our cultural resources, and develop mitigation measures.

NAGPRA/ CalNAGPRA and Repatriation

We actively participate in NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA to ensure the repatriation of our ancestors and cultural objects. We view NAGPRA and CalNAGPRA as essential tools for the preservation and protection of our cultural heritage. We work closely with museums, universities, and other institutions to identify and repatriate our ancestors and cultural objects, and to ensure that they are treated with the respect and dignity that they deserve.
